It is used along with a proper diet to help lower fats (triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It may also help to lower "bad" cholesterol (LDL).

It is contraindicated in patients with hepatic or severe renal dysfunction, including primary biliary cirrhosis. Preexisting gallbladder disease
